The 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa and beyond. EMS providers have to be prepared to treat or transport suspected or known Ebola patients. Join FirstWatch President and long-time advocate for the value of EMS data for public health surveillance, Todd Stout and former Chief Medical Officer for the US Department of Homeland Security, Alex Garza, MD, MPH as they discuss how EMS services in the USA and Canada responded to the threat of Ebola.

This presentation will focus on two main areas affecting EMS providers and their public health partners:

• EMS Agency Ebola information sharing and best practices development
  • Lessons learned from all of the North American EMS agencies that have transported patients with confirmed Ebola (Dallas, Omaha, Grady/Atlanta, NYC & AMR)
  • EMS data surveillance approaches
    • Call-Taking/Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and electronic Patient Care Records (ePCR)

Objectives:

1. Learn EMS-specific best practices & recommendations for treatment and transport of suspected or confirmed Ebola patients shared by EMS Agencies with Ebola patient transport experience
2. Learn what EMS-Specific online resources are available, for Ebola and future emerging infectious diseases to share with your local EMS partners
