From Deron Wilkes, Operations Chief, WV Office of Emergency Medical Services:

I wanted to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in a very unique training opportunity.  The WV Office of EMS and the WV EMS TSN are hosting a Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals course.  The course was designed, and is being provided, by the Wilderness Medical Institute (WMI), a part of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).  The course builds on your background in urban emergency care and you'll learn how to improvise equipment, deal with challenging environmental conditions, and make difficult medical decisions in remote locations.  This intense, hands-on curriculum utilizes daily role plays, case studies and practical scenarios. Expect to spend plenty of time applying your knowledge. This five-day course is ideal for EMT's, nurses, physicians, certified athletic trainers and other medical professionals. The course will upgrade EMTs to WEMT and all others to Wilderness First Responders in accordance with the current standards in wilderness /rural pre-hospital medicine.

We are fortunate to have Justin Padgett of Landmark Learning to be serving as the lead instructor for the program.  Some of you may remember Justin from the "Introduction to Wilderness Medicine" pre-conference workshop at last year's State EMS Conference.

The course will be conducted at the Greenbrier County Youth Camp in Anthony, Greenbrier County, WV.  This facility is located within the Monongahela National Forest on the banks of the Greenbrier River.  There is a multitude of recreational activities available during the evening hours including hiking, swimming, fishing, canoeing (canoes provided), or bring your bike and ride the Greenbrier River Trail.

The non-refundable course fees are $75 per person. This amount covers your tuition, books, housing, and meals.  You can register by contacting Carla Wisman at the Elkview WV EMS TSN office.  She can be reached at 304.965.0573 or 800.525.6324.  The course will run from the Friday evening (September 11 2009) through Thursday morning (September 17 2009).  Registration is limited to 25 students.

Please post the attached flyer for your staff's information.  If you have any questions about the course or facilities, please feel free to contact me.

Hope to see you in September.
