Advanced Care Technician

Information regarding certification, renewal, and legal recognition (reciprocity) for the Advanced Care Technician.

Initial Certification

Personnel qualify for certification as an Advanced Care Technician by meeting the following requirements:

  • Successfully complete an ACT Education Program.
  • Create a Continuum account.
  • Submit an online application and certification fee.
  • Possess a current EMT certification.
  • Complete a background check.
  • Submit a copy of your CPR card.
  • Successfully complete a WVOEMS approved MCI Awareness and Operations or higher, one time requirement.
  • Successfully complete Hazmat Awareness training meeting OSHA 1910.120 or higher standards on a yearly basis.
  • Successfully complete the written and practical examination with a score of 70% for the level of certification by the National Registry - I-99.
  • Complete the Interactive EMS Certification Application and pay for your certification. After completing payment online, you will be presented with a fingerprint voucher. Take this voucher to an authorized background check provider and complete the background check process.
  • Submit proof of a current approved CPR credential for the professional rescuer.
  • Complete four (4) hours of Hazmat Awareness training each certification period.


  • Maintain National Registry certification for Advanced Care Technician.
  • Successfully complete all the continuing education requirements and topics as outlined by the NREMT.
  • Submit a copy of your CPR card.
  • Submit an online application and recertification fee.
  • Complete a background check, if you have not done so in the past.
  • Successfully complete Hazmat Awareness training meeting OSHA 1910.120 or higher standards on a yearly basis.*
  • Complete the skills evaluations.


* CLARIFICATION: Applications with MCI/HazMat hours noted for 2013 will be processed (individuals who were mid-recert cycle when the change was made), however, in accordance with the policy effective January 2014 recertifications beginning 2014 will NOT.
