EMT-Paramedic

Information regarding certification, renewal, and legal recognition (reciprocity) for the EMT-Paramedic.

Initial Certification

Personnel qualify for certification as an EMT-P by meeting the following requirements:

  • Successfully completed an approved EMT-P training course following the DOT National Standard Curriculum.
  • Successfully complete both the written and practical examination with a score of 70% or higher.
  • Possess current WV certification as an EMT-B.
  • Possess a current CPR card.
  • Be affiliated with a West Virginia Licensed EMS Agency.
  • Apply for certification using the Interactive EMS Certification Application. After completing payment online, you will be presented with a fingerprint voucher. Take this voucher to an authorized background check provider and complete the background check process.
  • Submit copies of current drivers license and CPR card to the Office of EMS.

Recertification

To recertify as an EMT-Paramedic one must meet the requirements set forth by the ALS Recertification Requirements Policy. After meeting the requirements, apply for recertification with the Interactive EMS Certification Application.

Legal Recognition

  • After qualifying for Legal Recognition, apply for certification using the Interactive EMS Certification Application. After completing payment online, you will be presented with a fingerprint voucher. Take this voucher to an authorized background check provider and complete the background check process.
  • Mail copies of your current drivers license and CPR card to the Office of EMS.
  • You must have at least six (6) months of certification left on your current card, or:
    • Recertify in state with current certification and then re-apply for legal recognition.
    • With permission from the Office of EMS, take the 48-hour refresher course (Scheduled through WV EMS Technical Support Network, Inc.)
  • You must be affiliated with a West Virginia-licensed EMS Agency.
  • You must successfully complete the WV refresher examination, both the written and practical examination, with a score of 70% or higher.
  • You must successfulloy complete any regional requirements.
